Liaoning sits on China's eastern edge — half the waves of the Yellow Sea and Bohai, half the open plains of the northeast. Dalian's coastal road, Shenyang's Qing palace, Benxi's underground river: sea-breeze romance and northeastern boldness in one province.
Dalian's coastal road hugs the cliffs above the Yellow Sea, golden at dusk. The Mukden Palace in Shenyang is the Qing dynasty's pre-Beijing palace — smaller than the Forbidden City, but closer to the Manchu beginning. Benxi Water Cave is an underground river you ride by boat, lit stalactites like another planet.
Jinzhou barbecue is the peak of northeastern BBQ: small skewers, charcoal, cumin and chilli, with a beer. Guobaorou is the face of northeastern cooking: pork tenderloin fried crisp, tossed in sweet-and-sour sauce.
